How to Choose Web Hosting for a Sri Lankan Business Website
Shared, VPS or cloud? What to check on speed, server location, security, backups, email, support and renewals before choosing a host for your business website.
Your web host is where your website, and often your business email, lives. The right plan keeps pages fast, stays online and protects your data. The wrong one means slow pages, surprise renewal bills and missing emails. Here is what to check before you choose, including a few points that matter in Sri Lanka.
Start with what your website needs to do
Hosting needs vary a lot, so be clear about your site before comparing plans:
- Brochure website: a few pages about your services, a contact form and a map. Most small businesses start here.
- Blog or news site: regular posts and images, usually on WordPress.
- Online shop: products, a cart, payments and customer accounts, for example with WooCommerce.
- Web application: a booking system, portal or custom software with a database behind it.
Also think about business email, how many visitors you expect and who will look after updates.
The main types of hosting
Shared hosting
Many websites share one server, each with its own account and a control panel such as cPanel. It is the most affordable option and suits most brochure sites, blogs and small shops. Plans set limits on processing power, memory and storage, so a very busy site can outgrow them.
VPS hosting
A virtual private server gives you a guaranteed slice of a server’s resources and full control of the software. It suits busier shops and custom applications, but someone has to manage security updates and configuration, either your team or a managed service.
Cloud hosting
Platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and Huawei Cloud let you add resources as you grow and pay for what you use. They are flexible and powerful, but billing is often in US dollars and setup needs technical skills or a partner to manage it.
| Type | Best for | Who manages it | Room to grow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared | Brochure sites, blogs, small shops | The host | Limited by the plan |
| VPS | Busy shops, custom apps | You or a managed service | Move to a larger server |
| Cloud | Growing platforms, changing traffic | Your team or a partner | Scales on demand |
What to check before you buy
Server location and speed
If most visitors are in Sri Lanka, a server in the region, such as Singapore, usually responds faster than one in the US or Europe. Ask where the server is, whether storage is SSD or NVMe, and whether caching is included. A content delivery network (CDN) helps if you also have overseas visitors.
Uptime and support
Look for an uptime commitment in writing and support you can reach during Sri Lankan business hours, by phone or WhatsApp as well as tickets. When your site is down on a Monday morning, a quick local reply matters more than a long feature list.
Security
- Free SSL certificates, so every page loads over HTTPS.
- Malware scanning and a web application firewall.
- Two-factor authentication for the control panel.
- Current PHP and database versions, and help keeping WordPress and plugins updated.
Backups
Ask how often backups run, how many days are kept, whether copies are stored away from the server and how quickly a restore can be done. Even with good host backups, keep your own copy of your site and database.
An address like info@yourbusiness.lk looks more professional than free webmail. Check mailbox sizes and spam filtering, and make sure SPF, DKIM and DMARC records can be set up so your messages reach inboxes rather than spam folders. If you prefer Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, your host should help point your domain to them.
Billing and renewals
Compare renewal prices, not just the first-year offer. Check whether the price includes the domain, SSL and email, whether you can pay in rupees by bank transfer, and whether you can download a full copy of your site if you ever decide to move.
Local points worth considering
- Mobile visitors: many customers browse on mobile data from Dialog, SLT-Mobitel or Hutch, so keep pages light and compress images.
- Personal data: if your site collects names, phone numbers or orders, the Personal Data Protection Act, No. 9 of 2022 applies. Its provisions on processing personal data and on controllers and processors come into operation on 1 January 2027, so choose a host that can explain how it secures and backs up your data.
- Online payments: if you plan to accept cards, check your payment gateway’s technical requirements before choosing a plan.
Red flags to avoid
- “Unlimited” plans with vague fair-use limits.
- No backups, or backups kept only on the same server.
- Renewal prices that are hard to find.
- No way to export your website or email.
Frequently asked questions
How much storage does a small business website need?
Most brochure websites need only a few gigabytes. Email, images and backups use more, so check mailbox limits separately and choose a plan with room to grow.
Can I move my existing website to a new host?
Yes. The files and database are copied to the new server and tested, then the domain’s DNS is pointed to it. Plan the email move at the same time and switch during a quiet period, because DNS changes can take a few hours to spread.
Do I need to buy an SSL certificate?
Usually not. Most hosts include free certificates that renew automatically, which is enough for most business sites and shops. Paid certificates with organisation validation are mainly useful when a bank, partner or tender asks for one.
