.lk vs .com: Which Domain Should Your Business Use?

Your domain name is your address online and the second half of every business email you send. For most Sri Lankan businesses the choice comes down to a.lk address, a.com, or both. Each has real strengths, and the right one depends on where your customers are.
The basics
.lk is Sri Lanka’s country-code domain. It is administered by the LK Domain Registry, an independent not-for-profit organisation. You can register a name directly under.lk, such as yourbusiness.lk, or under a second-level domain such as.com.lk,.org.lk,.edu.lk,.web.lk or.hotel.lk. Names can also be registered in the Sinhala and Tamil language top-level domains.
.com is the best-known generic domain in the world. It is sold by registrars everywhere and is not tied to any country.
How registration works
Registering a.lk domain
The LK Domain Registry reviews each request before activating it. You name the registrant and organisation and give a reason for choosing the name. Some categories need supporting documents, such as a Central Bank licence for banking names or a letter from the principal for a school, and a trademark owner’s no-objection letter may be requested.
- A complete, paid application is usually registered within one working day, according to the Registry.
- There is currently no local presence requirement, so overseas companies can register too.
- Names can be registered for 1, 2, 5 or 10 years.
- In general, ownership can be changed only for a genuine reason, such as a company name change or the sale of a business.
Registering a.com
A.com is registered almost instantly, with no review or documents. That makes it quick and easy, but it also means anyone can register names similar to yours.
What it costs
At the time of writing (2026), the LK Domain Registry’s published prices, including VAT, start at around Rs 1,000 a year for a second-level name such as.com.lk. A name directly under.lk costs about Rs 5,000 a year, or about Rs 8,000 as a full package that also covers the available second-level names. Longer terms are discounted, and short or premium names cost more. A.com usually costs a few thousand rupees a year, depending on the registrar and the exchange rate. Agents set their own prices, so compare renewal fees as well as the first year.
Trust and branding
A.lk address tells visitors straight away that you are a Sri Lankan business, and the Registry’s review step adds a check that most generic domains do not have. A.com feels familiar everywhere, which helps if you sell overseas, serve tourists or export.
Whichever you choose, keep the name short, easy to spell and easy to say on the phone. That matters more than the extension.
What about SEO?
Google’s guidance says country-code domains such as.lk send a strong signal to users and search engines that a site is meant for a particular country. That can help when customers search from Sri Lanka, but it makes it harder to target other countries from the same site.
Google treats.com as generic and relies on other signals, such as local addresses and phone numbers, language and currency, links from local sites and your Business Profile. Either way, useful content and a fast, mobile-friendly site matter far more than the extension.
Email on your domain
Both.lk and.com work equally well for business email. Deliverability depends on setting up SPF, DKIM and DMARC records and keeping a clean sending reputation, not on the extension. Shorter is easier, though: sales@yourbusiness.lk is simpler to read out than sales@yourbusiness.com.lk.

- Brand protection: nobody else can use your name in the other extension.
- One main website: pick a primary domain and redirect the other to it, so search engines see a single site.
- Second-level names: the Registry’s full package includes the available second-level names, so no one else can register yourbusiness.com.lk.
A quick way to decide
- Customers mainly in Sri Lanka? Make.lk your main domain.
- Selling or working internationally? Use.com, and register the.lk to protect your name.
- On a tight budget? A.com.lk is the most affordable local option.

Can a foreign company register a.lk domain?
Yes. The LK Domain Registry currently has no local presence requirement, so overseas individuals and companies can register directly or through an agent in Sri Lanka.
Can I switch from.com to.lk later?
Yes, with some planning. Set up permanent (301) redirects from old pages to new ones, update your email addresses and Google Search Console, and keep renewing the old domain so links and emails still reach you.
What is the difference between.lk and.com.lk?
The Registry calls a name like yourbusiness.lk a top-level domain and yourbusiness.com.lk a second-level domain. The first is shorter and costs more, the second is the budget option, and the full package covers both.
